Abbey of Sant'Andrea of Borzone
The Borzone Abbey complex, located in the municipality of Borzonasca, is a veritable artistic jewel and one of the most important historical and architectural landmarks in Liguria. Made of stone and brick, it is situated right on the so-called ‘Sacred Line of St. Michael’, which connects a number of sanctuaries and monasteries stretching from Ireland to the Holy Land. Almost all of these were built in the early Middle Ages and symbolically represent the believer’s righteous journey towards God, aligned precisely with the setting sun on the summer solstice. The Abbey’s cypress tree is a regional landmark in Liguria, thought to be 600 years old and the last remaining of three centuries-old cypresses that once grew in the churchyard.

It was built around the 12th century by the Benedictine monks from Borzone to offer spiritual comfort to the valley’s inhabitants and provide hospitality to wayfarers. Due to its importance and beauty, it has become a “Luogo del Cuore FAI” (FAI Place of the Heart).
